Alexander (Northern) Leyland PD1

Introduced by Leyland in 1948 the PD1 quickly established itself in many bus fleets across the country, including London Transport, eventually replacing many of the pre-war buses. In 1961 the most northerly services of the Alexander empire transferred to a separate company, W.Alexander & Sons (Northern) Ltd. which adopted its own striking yellow and cream livery. This is a 'Lowbridge' bus with a side gangway on the upper deck.

Northern Scottish Daimler Fleetline

EFE Daimler Fleetline in Northern Scottish livery with SBG corporate identity fleet logo incorporating the Scottish saltire. The Fleetline, with Alexander highbridge 75-seat bodywork, was used by several SBG fleets (including Western Scottish) and it was not unusual for the same bus to serve with more than one fleet. When new, the subject of this model was allocated to Midland Scottish for a short period before being transferred to Northern Scottish and repainted in the striking yellow and cream livery adopted in 1961 when the most northerly Alexander services were transferred to a separate company.

W.Alexander Leyland Tiger TS8 (1939/40)

EFE Leyland Tiger TS8, repainted in W.Alexander's later two-tone blue service bus livery. When new, this vehicle would have been finished in the well-known 'Bluebird' luxury coach livery. Walter Alexander ran his first 'charabanc' in Falkirk in 1914. By the mid 1950's W.Alexander & Sons Ltd., as part of he SMT Group, operated Scotland's largest fleet of 2000buses and coaches with services spanning most of Scotland from Glasgow in the west to Stirling and Edinburgh in the east and northwards to Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. The Leyland TS8 Tiger, as used by W.Alexander, was a 39-seat variant of the standard Leyland (35-seat) product developed specifically for use in SMT (Scottish Motor Traction) Group fleets. Known as the TS8 Tiger ‘Special', a batch of 150 (all with bodywork by the Alexander coachbuilding subsidiary) was shared between Alexanders, SMT and Western SMT during 1939/40 and the type remained in service with Alexanders until the early 1960s.

The second of the batch (Alexander fleet no.P573) is currently undergoing restoration at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum, Lathalmond, Fife. (See the ‘Useful Links’ page).

An eye-catching model of the EFE Leyland Tiger TS8 in the special 'SMT Red' livery of W.Alexander & Sons Ltd. Prior to 1961 the normal Alexander service bus livery was azure blue with cream bands. However, exceptions to this rule were made in the cases of buses reserved for Perth and Kirkcaldy town services. Detailed with the 'Alexander' fleet name in yellow and black and appropriate legal and small lettering in gold.
 
 
   
AEC Regal 1 - Alexander (Northern)

In 1947/8 W.Alexander & Sons Ltd. took delivery of a batch of 17 AEC Regal 1 single deck buses with 35-seat Burlingham bodywork.

In 1961 the Burlingham bodied AEC Regal 1’s were all allocated to W.Alexander & Sons (Northern) Ltd . based in Aberdeen with some continuing in service until the mid 1960’s. From 1962 onwards they were repainted in the new ‘Northern’ yellow and cream livery which achieved a high level of visibility in the winter road conditions of northern Scotland.
